Hoi An Lanterns: More Than Decoration, a Living Vietnamese Tradition

Nguyen Tai Tuan

If you’ve ever scrolled through travel photos of Vietnam, you’ve undoubtedly seen them: thousands of silk lanterns glowing like fallen stars against the dark indigo of a riverside night. This is Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage site where time seems to slow down, and the air is filled with the scent of incense and the soft hum of tradition.

But in Hoi An, lanterns are far more than just pretty decorations. They are the heartbeat of a culture.

A Journey Through Time

The story of the Hoi An lantern dates back centuries, to a time when this town was one of the busiest trading ports in Southeast Asia. Legend has it that the first lanterns were brought by Japanese and Chinese merchants, but it was the Vietnamese artisans who breathed local soul into them.

They took the simple lantern and transformed it using native bamboo and Hoi An silk, creating the iconic shapes we see today. For the locals, lighting a lantern is an act of bringing luck, peace, and happiness to their home.

The Art of the Artisan: How a Lantern is Born

When you hold one of our lanterns, you are holding days of patient craftsmanship. A true Hoi An bamboo lantern cannot be mass-produced by machines; it requires the "human touch" at every stage:

  1. The Bamboo Frame: Artisans select aged bamboo, which is treated to ensure durability and flexibility. Each slat is carefully shaved and tied to form the "skeleton" of the lantern.
  2. The Silk Covering: This is the most delicate part. The artisan stretches premium silk (often the famous Ha Dong silk) over the ribs. The fabric must be pulled just right—not too tight to tear, and not too loose to wrinkle.
  3. The Final Flourish: A wooden base and a silk tassel are added, completing a piece of art that is both lightweight and incredibly sturdy.

More Than Just a Light: A Symbol of Connection

Why has this tradition survived for hundreds of years? Because a lantern represents connection.

During the monthly Hoi An Lantern Festival, the entire town turns off its electric lights. The only glow comes from these silk masterpieces. It’s a moment where the modern world stops, and people connect with their ancestors, their heritage, and each other.
